Mounjaro is an injectable medication that is taken weekly. It is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar. Mounjaro is included in a family of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. It has also been shown to lead to considerable weight loss in patient with elevated body mass index.
Mounjaro is FDA approved for type 2 diabetes. This medication may be right for you if you have type 2 diabetes with an elevated hemoglobin A1C. Mounjaro is also commonly used "off label" for patients with body mass index greater than 30. If you use this medication for weight loss, then you would accept the risks of using this medication "off label' and potentially have side effects without clear FDA-approved benefit.
You may have noticed a number of doses listed. Patients start at a low dose of 2.5mg per week. Some patients experience excellent results at that dose and do not require a higher dose. Other patients will need gradually dose escalation each month as tolerated.
Side effects of Mounjaro include (but are not limited to) nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, low energy, and even depression. Nausea seems to be the most common side effect encountered by our physicians.
Mounjaro can cause serious side effects such as inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) or serious allergic reactions. Stop using Mounjaro and get medical help right away if you have persistent abdominal pain or any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, problems breathing or swallowing, severe rash or itching, fainting or feeling dizzy, and very rapid heartbeat).
